AVIF already produces the smallest files of any widely supported image format, which makes further compression sound pointless. It rarely is. Encoder defaults are conservative, and AVIF files exported by design tools and conversion scripts frequently retain colour profiles and metadata that add weight without adding anything visible.

How AVIF compression works

AVIF is built on the AV1 video codec, applied to a single frame, which is where its efficiency comes from. Things to know about AVIF

AVIF support is good but not universal. Chrome, Firefox and Safari all support it in current versions, though users on older browsers will need a fallback — a <picture> element with a WebP or JPEG source handles this cleanly. Encoding is also markedly slower than JPEG or WebP, which matters when processing large batches. AVIF pays off most on large images where the size difference is worth the extra encode time.

Is AVIF really smaller than WebP and JPEG?

Yes, typically by a wide margin. AVIF commonly produces files around half the size of an equivalent JPEG, and meaningfully smaller than WebP, at comparable visual quality. The advantage is largest on photographic content and large images.

Why is AVIF slower to process?

AVIF uses the AV1 codec, which explores far more encoding possibilities than JPEG or WebP to find the most efficient representation. That search is what produces the smaller file, and it costs processing time.

Which browsers support AVIF?

Current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari all support AVIF. For older browsers, serve it inside a <picture> element with a WebP or JPEG fallback so unsupported clients get a working image.

Does AVIF support transparency?
